Hearts in the Highlands
Service Learning in sapa's Hidden Paradise
Nestled in the heart of Lao Cai Province, Sapa is a breathtaking mountainous district in northwest Vietnam—renowned for its stunning natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. Once a modest “sand village” where locals gathered to trade goods, Sapa has transformed into a peaceful haven of misty mountains, terraced rice fields, and vibrant ethnic communities.
what makes sapa truely special?
For students and teachers alike, Sapa is more than just a place to visit—it’s a place to connect, contribute, and be inspired by the resilience, warmth, and beauty of the people and the land.
A Refreshing Climate Year-Round
With average temperatures around 15°C, Sapa offers a cool, temperate retreat. Summers are mild—ranging from 13°C at night to 25°C during the day—perfect for outdoor learning and activities. In winter, the landscape is often wrapped in mist and cloud, with temperatures occasionally dropping below 0°C, creating a magical, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
An Inspiring Landscape Rich in Culture
Sapa is not only a scenic paradise—it’s home to diverse ethnic groups with unique traditions, making it an ideal destination for meaningful cultural exchange and community engagement.
Genuine Community Impact at Hau Thao School
Located in the heart of Muong Hoa Commune, Hau Thao Ethnic Semi-Boarding Primary & Secondary School serves as a vital educational hub for 805 students from ethnic minority backgrounds. Over 350 students live on campus from Monday to Friday through a semi-boarding program, supported by government subsidies. These students come from remote villages, and the boarding model helps ensure they can stay in school and continue their education.

Day 1:
Arrival in Hanoi
The journey begins with a warm welcome to Hanoi, where the vibrant streets are alive with history and energy. After a delicious introduction to Vietnamese cuisine at KOTO Restaurant—a social enterprise helping disadvantaged youth—we explore the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology for a deep dive into the country’s diverse cultures. As the day winds down, we begin our journey to Lao Cai, a scenic 8-hour train ride full of anticipation.
Day 2:
Welcome to Sapa
Our adventure begins with an overnight train ride from Hanoi to Lao Cai, offering a scenic journey through Vietnam’s countryside. After arriving in Lao Cai, we drive up to Sapa, where we’re welcomed by misty mountains and cool air.We kick off the day with a delicious bowl of Bac Ha Pho, a local specialty known for its rich broth and fresh herbs, at Phở Bắc Hà Quân Luyến Chính Hiệu. Afterward, we head to Hầu Thào Primary and Secondary School for a warm welcome and to connect with the local community. The day ends with a dinner prepared by our students, celebrating both local flavors and new friendships.
Day 3-5:
Service Learning in Muong Hoa
The heart of the trip comes to life in Muong Hoa Valley, where students dive into hands-on service work. Whether it’s creating a vegetable garden at Hau Thao School, teaching English through flashcards and fun games, or designing a vibrant 40m² mural, every task is an opportunity to make a lasting impact. These days are not just about service; they are about building strong bonds with the H’Mong students, learning their language, culture, and sharing their journey.
Day 6:
Cultural Exchange and Creative Connections
The focus shifts to cross-cultural exchange. Students from the Singaporean school share their own traditions and experiences with the H’Mong students, and vice versa, in a cultural exchange night full of storytelling, traditional dances, and music performances. It’s an evening of laughter, unity, and discovery—complete with a puppet show about Singapore's history, performed by the students, followed by a joyous campfire gathering that celebrates the beauty of shared experiences.
Day 7:
Learning from Local Champions of Change – Visit to TraphacoSapa
Participants will visit TraphacoSapa, a leading Vietnamese company that blends traditional knowledge with modern innovation to create social impact. They’ll hear firsthand from the Board of Directors about partnerships with ethnic minority farmers to cultivate artichokes as a sustainable livelihood. The visit showcases how business can empower communities, promote gender equality, and preserve cultural heritage. More than just a company tour, this is a real-world look at social entrepreneurship in action. Students will leave inspired by how values like compassion and collaboration can fuel meaningful change.
Day 8:
Exploring Hanoi’s Ancient Charm
A return to Hanoi offers a refreshing change of pace. Stroll through the 36 Ancient Streets of the Old Quarter, rich in history, tradition, and local crafts. A relaxing stop for a cup of Vietnamese coffee marks the end of an incredible journey.
